How Can Transmission of GBS to a Newborn Be Prevented?

It is important to get tested for GBS during every pregnancy

The following factors can increase the likelihood of newborns being infected with GBS:

  • Mother is a carrier of GBS
  • Urinary tract infection or vaginal infection by GBS during pregnancy
  • Previous birth where the infant had GBS
  • Prolonged labour after water breaking till delivery
  • Mother developing a fever during delivery

In most cases, early-onset Group B Streptococcus (GBS) can be prevented. A mother who is a carrier of GBS will be given intravenous antibiotics during labour. These antibiotics are also given during labour to pregnant women who have given birth in the past to a baby with GBS.

Antibiotics taken during labour are more effective than taking medication before labour. Because the bacteria naturally lives in the intestines of healthy adults, the bacteria will come back after the course of antibiotics is complete.

It is important to get tested for GBS during every pregnancy. This could decrease the risk of GBS infection in the newborn child, and treatment is relatively simple.
