What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy or the time period between conception and birth.

Women diagnosed with GDM were not diabetic before they were pregnant. This type of diabetes may develop when the placenta produces various hormones, some of which may have anti-insulin-producing properties. This reduction in insulin means that blood sugar levels can rise, leading to GDM. GDM has health implications for both mother and baby if left unmonitored before birth.
