Dr Cheung is a registered psychologist with years of experience in clinical work. She has obtained an MPhil and also a PhD (Psychiatry) from the University of Hong Kong. She has held various academic positions, most recently as an Honorary Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hong Kong from 2009 – 2020 and an Associate Professor at the Department of Counselling and Psychology and Hong Kong Shue Yan University from 2015-2016, teaching post-graduate level students on psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, play therapy and counselling.
Her main approach in her clinical practice stems from the Jungian school in psychology, which believes that our emotions, relationships and behaviour are driven by underlying personal developmental and cultural influences that we may not be aware ourselves, nor are they immediately apparent or observable. Through an analysis of a person’s deep-seated beliefs and emotions, Dr Cheung believes that this will help to manage various psychological and psychiatric conditions (such as anxiety co-morbid with depression). She believes that the best treatment of her clients involves working in close collaboration with relevant professionals and clients’ family.
She has been invited by schools, non-government organizations, and national corporations to give talks on parenting, child & adolescent psychology, adult psychiatry, couple & marital relationship on many occasions. She has also been interviewed by newspaper and TV on sandplay therapy, family dynamics and psychiatric conditions.
