Overview

What is Celecoxib?

Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that specifically targets cyclooxygenase- 2 (COX-2) enzymes (a COX-2 inhibitor), reducing inflammation and pain.

Active ingredient: Celecoxib

Global Name

Generic name: Celecoxib
Brand names: Celebrex, Onsenal

Usage

What is Celecoxib used for?

Celecoxib is used for:

  • Relieving pain and inflammation associated with arthritis
  • Managing acute pain and menstrual cramps
  • Reducing the number of colon and rectal polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis, when used as directed by a doctor.

How do you use Celecoxib?

Availability:

Celecoxib is available in capsule form.

Dosage Information:

  • Adults: Dosage varies by condition, typically ranging from 100 mg twice to 200 mg once daily.
  • Children: Use and dose must be determined by a healthcare provider.

Suitable for:

  • Children: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established for most conditions.
  • Adults: Broadly used across adult age groups.
  • Elderlies: May require lower doses due to increased risk of adverse effects or drug accumulation.

Not Suitable for:

    • Children: without specific medical advice
    • Patients with known hypersensitivity to celecoxib, sulfonamides, or other NSAIDs
    • Individuals with a history of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
    • In the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
    • Individuals with active gastritis, duodenitis or peptic-ulcer disease
    • Pregnancy: Celecoxib may cause harm to the fetus, particularly in the third trimester, and should not be used by pregnant women unless advised by healthcare professionals in special circumstances
    • Lactation: It is not known if celecoxib is excreted in human milk. Due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from celecoxib, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

Allergies and Warnings:

Celecoxib should be avoided by those with known hypersensitivity to celecoxib, sulfonamides, or other NSAIDs, and individuals with a history of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. It is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Precautions and Interactions:

  • Celecoxib can be taken with or without food. However, taking it with food may help to minimise gastrointestinal discomfort.
  • Celecoxib may interact with other medications such as warfarin, ACE inhibitors, and furosemide. It is contraindicated in patients with active gastrointestinal bleeding.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include stomach pain, diarrhoea, and indigestion. Serious side effects like heart attack, stroke, and gastrointestinal bleeding can occur.

Pharmacist Tips

  • Dosage Adherence: Stick to the prescribed dosage and schedule to manage your condition effectively and minimise the risk of side effects.
  • Awareness of Side Effects: Monitor for signs of stomach ulcers or bleeding, such as bloody stools or coughing up blood, and seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
  • Drug Interactions: List all your medications and share them with your healthcare provider to avoid potential interactions.
  • Preventive Measures: Take celecoxib with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach upset or ulcers. An antacid (e.g. Gaviscon, Maalox), H2-antagonist (e.g. famotidine, ranitidine) or proton pump inhibitor (PPI) (e.g. omeprazole, pantoprazole) may be paired.
  • Regular Monitoring: Regularly review your treatment with your healthcare provider, especially if you have a history of heart disease or stroke.
  • Safe Storage: Store celecoxib at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
  • Proper Disposal: Do not keep leftover or expired medication. Find out about take-back programs or consult your pharmacist for disposal instructions.
